Crystal – A Legacy Line, Meaningfully Renewed
For thirty years, Crystal built one of the most loyal followings in luxury cruising. The reputation was earned through a particular kind of onboard culture — intellectually engaged, socially warm, unhurried — and a space-to-guest ratio that made even the largest public rooms feel considered rather than crowded. That culture, and those standards, are what drew guests back year after year.
In 2022, A&K Travel Group — the ownership behind Abercrombie & Kent, one of the world’s most respected luxury travel operators — acquired the Crystal brand and its two flagship ships. Both vessels underwent extensive refurbishment at Fincantieri in Trieste before returning to service in the summer of 2023. The result is a line that carries its heritage with confidence while being, in several meaningful ways, stronger than it has ever been.
The Ships
Two ships currently operate. Crystal Serenity, the larger of the two, carries approximately seven hundred and forty guests following a capacity reduction during the 2023 refit — larger suites, fewer cabins, which is exactly the right trade-off for a line operating at this level. Crystal Symphony carries around six hundred guests and underwent the same treatment. Both ships now sail with updated suites featuring Italian marble fittings, refreshed public spaces and a dining programme that has been significantly strengthened under A&K’s stewardship.
A fleet expansion is well underway. Crystal Grace, the first newbuild, is scheduled for delivery in May 2028 — carrying approximately six hundred and fifty guests in all-suite accommodation. Two further sister ships follow in 2030 and 2032. For a line with Crystal’s heritage, this level of investment signals genuine long-term ambition.

Dining
The most talked-about addition to the dining programme is Umi Uma by Nobu Matsuhisa — the only Nobu restaurant at sea, serving the contemporary Japanese cuisine that has made the Nobu name one of the most recognised in global luxury dining. Osteria d’Ovidio handles the more classical fine dining moments with an Italian sensibility. The main restaurant operates on an open-seating basis throughout the voyage, with menus that change daily.
Butler service is standard across all accommodation categories — a commitment that shapes the experience from the first morning and distinguishes Crystal from lines where this level of personalisation is reserved for the highest suite categories.
The A&K Shore Experience
One of the most meaningful changes under A&K ownership is the quality of the shore excursion programme. A&K’s ground operation spans over ninety countries with its own offices, local guides and long-established supplier relationships — the kind of infrastructure that takes decades to build and that a cruise line operating independently rarely has access to. The result is a level of destination immersion that genuinely extends what the onboard experience begins.
Destinations
Crystal’s itinerary range is broad — Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Alaska, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, Panama Canal transits, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. World Voyages of over one hundred and forty nights are a feature of both ships’ programmes and typically include multiple overnight port stays, which is the detail that distinguishes a Grand Voyage from a conventional itinerary in terms of how deeply a destination can be explored.
Who It’s For
Crystal suits experienced travellers who value intellectual enrichment alongside luxury — the onboard programme has always been distinguished by its lecture series, cultural performances and educational content, and this has been retained and strengthened. It works particularly well for those who want a product with genuine heritage and a long track record of excellence, now backed by the operational depth of one of the world’s most respected travel groups. The Nobu connection is also a meaningful draw for food-focused clients.
