Virgin Voyages: A Different Proposition at Sea

The cruise industry has long struggled to appeal to travellers who associate the category with buffets, formal nights and a particular kind of organised fun that bears no relation to how they want to spend their time. Virgin Voyages was built in direct response to that perception — and it makes a compelling case.

This is an adults-only line, entirely all-inclusive in its dining, and designed with a design sensibility that sits closer to a boutique hotel than a conventional cruise ship. It won’t suit everyone. For those it does suit, it tends to convert them quickly.

The Ships

Four vessels currently make up the fleet — Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady and Brilliant Lady — each carrying just over 2,700 guests. That’s not small by any measure, but the ships are designed to feel more intimate than the numbers suggest. Public spaces are divided into distinct zones with their own atmosphere and purpose, which means the experience of moving through the ship rarely feels like navigating a resort corridor.

The design is genuinely considered — contemporary art installations, mood lighting, a palette that avoids the nautical clichés — and the infinite veranda cabins, which blur the line between interior and outdoor space, give even standard accommodation a quality of light and openness that stands out in the category.

Dining

The all-inclusive dining model is one of Virgin’s most meaningful differentiators. Over twenty restaurants and eateries are included in the fare — no cover charges, no upcharges, no reservation anxiety. The range covers genuine ground: Korean BBQ at Gunbae, Mexican small plates at Pink Agave, vegetable-forward Mediterranean cooking at Razzle Dazzle, and a main restaurant, The Wake, which handles the more classic dining moments with care. Meals are made to order throughout, which matters more than it sounds after a few days at sea on a conventional line.

Itineraries

The primary homeport is Miami, which makes access straightforward for both UK and North American clients. Caribbean and Dominican Republic itineraries run year-round on four to eight night programmes, most including an overnight or late departure at key ports — a thoughtful detail that gives more genuine time ashore. Mediterranean sailings operate during summer from Barcelona, Athens and Rome. The Beach Club at Bimini, Virgin’s private Bahamian retreat, features on most Caribbean itineraries and is one of the line’s strongest assets — genuinely well-designed, with beach dining and cabanas that feel considerably more considered than the typical private island product.

People participate in a group yoga class onboard Scarlet Lady. Group fitness classes are included in the voyage fare.

Who It’s For

Virgin Voyages works particularly well for adults-only couples, honeymoons where the emphasis is on design and dining rather than ultra-luxury service, and first-time cruisers approaching the category from a hotel background. The tone is sophisticated without being formal, social without being overwhelming. It is less well-suited to those seeking the white-glove service levels of Seabourn or Silversea, or travellers who prefer a more traditional cruise experience.
